Dynamic sculptures are works of art which mix beauty with physical motion so that the end result is visually stunning. What makes these works special is that the creator needs to have a deep knowledge and skill of multiple disciplines eg.painting and physics, sculpture and electronics. Obviously there are not many such people but the few who exist have astonished the world with the beauty and complexity of their creations.
Anthony Howe’s Kinetic Sculptures
Anthony Howe, who lives in Washington, fabricates metal models , which are powered by the wind. His models are strong enough to withstand storms of 90mph and yet move in a gentle breeze. He started off his career as a painter, but then discovered that he liked to work with metal. His previous interest in wind and movement, made him extend his metal sculptures to become kinetic. He disliked the fact that traditional sculptures had to be static and lifeless and he wanted to bring in movement to make it more real and appealing.
He first designs the 3d structure on computer using CAD and then has them cut by laser and then assembles the parts together using traditional metalwork. He likes his creations to be big. He currently gets commissioned to do work for various customers all across the world. Work that he creates otherwise, is sold via his website.
His creations require him to understand the physics of wind and aerodynamics as his models have to withstand natural wind and are placed outdoors. He tests his models by first making a small part of it and then attaching it to his car and then driving his car at a certain speed. Unlike other art which can afford to be fragile and delicate, his models have to be very strong and durable.
