Dynamic sculptures are works of art which mix beauty with physical motion so that the end result is visually stunning. What makes these works special is that the creator needs to have a deep knowledge and skill of multiple disciplines eg.painting and physics, sculpture and electronics. Obviously there are not many such people but the few who exist have astonished the world with the beauty and complexity of their creations.
Wood Sculptures of David C.Roy
Connecticut based Roy specialises in creating wood sculptures that are powered only by mechanical springs – you wind them up and then watch the sculpture move. No electronics or motors or computers are used in his models. He studied physics, engineering and chemistry to understand how things worked and then inspired by his artist wife, he became a full-time sculptor.
Each of his sculptures is a machine made out of wood and when set in motion, creates interesting patterns. Though his sculptures look fragile they are quite sturdy. Almost all his sculptures use wood in two tones of brown. Some have a certain amount of metal depending on the object that has been made.
He prefers not to sell or distribute his original blueprints used to make the sculptures. He does limited edition works and also sells some of his works through his website. Though the sculptures continue in motion for a long time, they are not perpetual motion machines and stop when the spring has finally unwound – much like a clock.
